HAPPY...New Year

To celebrate the new year, I drew Happy from the Rankin and Bass classic Rudolph's Shiny New Year.  I made sure to include his adorable big ears. Enjoy!

Squirrely Winter

Our friends at Carol and John's Comics host a Christmas fundraiser for the Cleveland Foodbank every year. They ask local artists to donate comic cover art to raffle off at the end of the night. I am so excited about the new Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic coming out, so I had to do something with Squirrel Girl. There is also a running joke about Dazzler being the coolest superhero among some friends. My friend, Joe, is very dedicated to his Dazzler fandom. I mean, he has a jean jacket with "Dazzler" bedazzled across the back. That's dedication!

Penguin Cheer!

Hi all, Mark here!
After some time away from the blog, I'm back with some adorable Christmas cheer artwork.

For this piece, I took inspiration from Kirby, the Nintendo character, and I tried to emulate the look of Kirby's artwork (particularly the art of Kirby Super Star Ultra).
I typically don't use gradients, so this was a fun experiment!

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays, everybody!

Have a Beary Happy Holiday

My holiday cheer comes in the form of a handmade stamp ornament that I'll be handing out to my coworkers today. I created a fox stamp last year for the holidays and this year I decided to make a cute little polar bear stamped with silver ink.  It's perfect for decorating you Christmas Tree or Hanukkah bush ^_^

Thorin Oakenshield

Today's post comes from my living room couch under a heap of blankets. My annual tangle with the flu happened this week. I managed to finish Thorin before the flu took me down.

The Meat in a Middle-Earth Sandwich

This week we have a fanart Friday submission from Erin Caruso.  It's actually my Christmas gift from her, but it's so damn cute I'm submitting it and she'll have to deal! :P  (love you Erin!)

She drew me as the meat in a Fili and Thorin Sandwich.  Booyeah!!  I think she even drew them proportionally correct!  (so short and cute!)

You can check out more of Erin's wonderful art at her website Erin in Artland or at her instagram

Kings of Erebor

If you didn't know, I draw The Hobbit characters...a lot.

Fili is probably my favorite dwarf to draw,  mostly because I really love drawing those mustache braids. And Thorin...I honestly don't need a reason to draw Thorin.  I decided to depict them knocking noggins because according to the films, dwarf family member seem to share head bumps to show affection.

So, enjoy my double dose of Durin majesty.

The Krampus is coming to steal you!

You better watch out,
You better not cry,
Better not pout,
I'm telling you why:
The Krampus will roast you, alive!

Coal in your stocking? No, no, no, no. Krampus will steal you away in the night to enslave, roast you alive and eat the flesh off your bones. Coal doesn't sound so bad anymore doesn't it? Just be glad jolly old St. Nick isn't teamed up with this guy anymore. Or is he?

Fan Fridays: Krampus Edition!

Justin Pintabona

"It seems like Krampus is on the rise in popularity here in the US, though he's been around much longer back in the deep dark fairy-tale woods of Central Europe. Something about his devious Grinch-ness, scolding and stealing fussy children, offers a welcome counterbalance to the saccharine sweetness of cookies, reindeer and Old Saint Nick. Or, perhaps, it's just the promise that all those noisy, snotty little kids will be spirited away in the night so the grownups can enjoy their Christmas. Bah humbug, I say!"

Want to submit your art? We want to see more! Send your art to scribblenerds@gmail.com with your name, a little bit about your art, and any links to your site or social media hub. Even if it's an old challenge, we will be happy to post it on Friday! Come play with us... Come play with us...

Krampus Sketch

I was kind of bored with all the "traditional" Krampus images I found on the internet, so I decided to work on developing my own version. I used a goat face as my main inspiration while still working in some of his core design elements.  Still needs some development, but I hope you enjoy what I've got so far!

Big Barda!

When this challenge came up, the first character to pop into my head was Big Barda. Here's some info on this lovely buff lady.
Barda was born of the race of New Gods about 250 years ago, on Apokolips. She is a product of Granny Goodness' Home for Orphaned Youth. Granny's motto is "Die for Darkseid" (the planet's evil ruler). Granny grooms Barda to one day lead the Female Fury Battalion, a ferocious pack of women warriors. However, during a raid Barda meets Scott Free, Darkseid's adopted son, and, sensing a peace about him, falls in love.

So here's my (crappy non scanned) version of Big Barda, I've added some tattoos of course!
I'm going to clean it up and make it nice and purdy for the Buff Babe Zine!

Burly, Buff, Busty Babe

Meet Moana. She could crush you with her pinky if she wanted. Be nice.

This is my submission for the Buff Babes zine came with some grief. Oh man, do I not know how to draw muscles. Wait, you want a character that doesn't look like they're made from noodles and bubbles? Well, shit. Anyway, after some thrashing around and Tim telling me to stop complaining and just do the thing, I finally got here. Tim often has to be my Yoda.

So anyway, here's hoping they like it and take my submission!

Buff Beauty WIP

Pulling some ideas and rough sketches together for this weeks challenge.  I really wanted to focus on drawing a lady with some bodacious arms. Feeling like I'm headed in the right direction so now it's on to the final piece!

YUMMY! PIE!

When I say I want, you say pie.
I want...
Pie!
I want...
Pie!

When I say yummy,  you say pie.
Yummy!
Pie!
Yummy!
Pie!

FYI, I've been watching a lot of Teen Titans Go!

Ariel Dallas Multipass Under the Sea

For The Fifth Element theme, I chose to draw Ariel as Leeloo and Flounder as Korben Dallas. I chose this interpretation in honor of the 25th anniversary of The Little Mermaid, my wife's favorite Disney movie. I thought this would be a fun way to incorporate the weekly theme and the anniversary of The Little Mermaid.

Weekly Challenge: PIE!

AHHHHHHH!!! So guess what guys? It's pie week on Scribble Nerds! I am so excited! This is me right now:

Yeah, I get excited about pie. Like, so excited I had used to have a blog where I would make a new pie once a week. I did it for 2 years. My wallet and waistline didn't care for my shenanigans, so I went on an indefinite hiatus. I'm really excited to get back into the pie game with this week's drawing challenge.

I would love it super forever if you guys joined in the fun. There is not nearly enough pie art in this world. Let's change that! Soooooo:

Fifth Element: Work In progress + Sketches.

Hey there! Just a little late sunday night post from Shawny!

Since this week's challenge was The Fifth Element, I was inspired to do a big illustration for it.
So instead of having a finished piece, here is some of the sketches I've done. I'll eventually do a line drawing and then finish the rest in Illustrator. I've also included some sketches of other fifth element work that I'm currently working on as well!

This is my usual process when working on projects. Bunch of random sketches, then the rough, rough draft, where I make dumb notes! This usually works for me!

Leeloo will be the next lady in my sweethearts project!

And finally I really love the Flight Stewardess' outfits in the movie, so here's a couple of sketches of them too!

Leeloo Dallas!

This is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. No shame. I love how goofy it is, and it totally knows it. How could I resist drawing Leeloo? Ugh. I need to do a glorious painting of her.

Leeloo's Multi Pass

Hi all, Mark here!
This week's theme is the 90's movie "The Fifth Element".

The film features a "Multi Pass", which is like a combo passport, credit card & ID.  I did a cute version of the Multi Pass used by Leeloo, since my impulse to cute-ify things can't ever be ignored.  Sorry, not sorry.

Leeloo doesn't really act like this in the film, but I wanted to draw a chibi Milla Jovovich, dammit
Also, I originally did line-work for a more realistic version of Leeloo, featured below.

A Tribute for Armanda.

Dealing with the death of a loved one is hard. There is no real words, no way to express yourself when you lose someone dearly to you.

When I lost my father earlier this year, I went into a deep depression. Everything that brought me joy didn't and I felt myself falling into a hole that I could never get out.

So I started to read. ALOT. When I was younger I loved quotes. I'd read anything that talked about overcoming obstacles and inspirational words of wisdom.  I'd write them all over my sketchbooks and journals. They brought me comfort and made me think of the important things that matter.  So I started to look for quotes and stories of loss and ended up finding ones that really stuck with me. Dealing with my father's death became easier once I started to focus on the memories rather than the loss.

So when it came to doing a tribute for Ashley's friend Armanda, I decided to go with something that brought me some comfort and helped me learn what is truly important after you lose someone.

These quote reminds us of what really matters, celebrating the life and remembering that even though they are gone, they are never truly loss to you. Their lives will continue through you and your memories of them.  Rest in peace, Armanda.

For Armanda

I never got the chance to meet Armanda McCafferty, but from Ashley's description, she seemed like a really amazing person. My deepest sympathies to her friends, and family. I wish her peace.

Tribute to Armanda

My fellow Scribble Nerd had a dear friend pass away. Here's my piece to honor Armanda.

Hummingbird Tribute

Hi all, Mark here.
Today's post is a special tribute--
fellow Scribble Nerd Ashley's dear friend Armanda recently passed away, and as a group we each decided to illustrate a special piece in her memory.  I did not know Armanda, but I have learned from Ashley's writing that Armanda was a positive, compassionate, and very loving person.  She had liked the idea of a hummingbird and daisy for a tattoo, so my tribute features my take on those those two things.  I feel that the energy and beauty of a hummingbird is a fitting tribute for such a special person.

My deepest condolences go out to Armanda's family, friends and loved ones.
