Adorable Japan

Hi all, Mark here!
The theme this week is Japan-- I take a lot of inspiration from their culture, so this was a fun challenge!

A few years ago I designed these kimono cuties, and this week I decided it would be fun to make a traditional Japanese environment for them.

(I have a big soft spot for anthropomorphic characters.)
Who is your favorite kimono girl?  Mine's the swan.

Bonus Art!  Here are two buttons I designed that Japan-inspired.
(Kero mean "ribbit" in Japanese, and the creature on the right is a tanuki!)

Don't lose your way...to Japan!!!

Moshi-Moshi Internet!!!!

Japanese Anime has always been a huge influence in my art. I was deep into Manga and Anime long before it became a mainstream pop culture thing that it is today. When this weeks challenge of Japan came along there was nothing else I could think of then just share some recent anime fan art from my newest favorite show "Kill la Kill" and even a photo of me way back in 1997 when I served oversea's in Okinawa Japan!

Enjoy!

Great time overseas! Okinawa was a blast!

Kiki's F#@!in Delivery Service

throw back tuesday!

that's  how you do it, right?
whatev.

This week's theme is Japan, so here's a scribble I did a while ago for Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service, a cute story about a witch coming of age that I've somehow taken and displaced into the world of a Cohen Brothers movie where sometimes people are monsters and terrible things happen with absolutely no rhyme or reason and karmic justice is a farce.

Get it together, kid

Check out my other weird (and more uplifting) drawbles at my blooogggggggggg

Yukata Girl

I've been obsessed with Japan for about half of my life so it was hard to narrow down a subject matter for this piece. In the end, I decided to focus on the first things that came to mind when I thought of Japan: the color red, yukatas, and teru teru bozu.  Wiki some words and learn something new today ^_^.  And enjoy!

Weekly Challenge: Japan

Oha, minna-san!  Or maybe Konichiwa depending on when you’re reading this post.  This week the land of the rising sun will be the scribble nerd’s inspiration. It's a loaded theme and I'm excited to see the results!

It's hard to sum up a country in one picture, but here's my best attempt...

Let's go, Red!

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy make such a great team. They are Gotham's villainous odd couple. Between Harley's wacky antics and blunders and Ivy's idiosyncratic distaste for those less than photosynthetically inclined of Gotham, they are an adorable comedic goldmine.

This piece is for the Batman 75th Anniversary event at Carol and John's Comics TOMORROW! You can buy the original 11"x14" ink drawing for $65 or an 8.5"x11" print for $10. There is a limited number so get 'em while they're hot! A portion of the proceeds will go to Preston's H.O.P.E. The event will run from 10-10 with prizes and gifts for the more spirited attendee's (read - if you have a costume, wear it and get some cool stuff.)

Hi all, Mark here.
To celebrate Batman's 75th anniversary I did what I do best-- make cute character art.  The name of today's game is chibi style-- big heads and small bodies.

This piece will be part of a Batman gallery show at Carol & John's Comics in Lakewood, Ohio this Saturday!  Come check out tons of awesome art and mingle with the Scribble Nerds (as well as other local artists).

Happy 75th Batman!

Hello everyone! It's Batman's 75th and to celebrate I decided to illustrate two of The Bats favorite villains, Catwoman and Poison Ivy!

These two beauties will be showing at Carol and John's pop up art gallery Saturday, in celebration of Batman's first appearance. Tons of things going on that day at CNJ so check it out!
These two illustrations also kick starts my Sweetheart Project. It's going to be a great personal project that I am really looking forward too and I'm sure you'll like it as well!

Hank's got a thing about Bats...

Hello, my name is Henry Pope III and I have a confession to make.

I am addict.

The Batman.

He pop's up twice in my skecthbook.

I drew Bat's spitting in an alley.

I made little Batman trading cards!

I created a massive 33in. x 17in Batman Mural!!!

I have such an addiction that this morning, this happened!

Now even Pink & Nanook are getting in on it!!!

I am Henry Pope III and I am a Batman Addict.

My job is to make people want to gamble.

When I get home from work, I make all the cool art you guys have seen so far on this blog. During the day, I design attention grabbing art for games played at bingo halls, bars, and charitable gaming events. While I can't show you the full art for confidentiality reasons, I can show you parts. My designs are always very character driven as I try to create a narrative for every game.

Come get a taste of the ANIMAL NATION!

What's up Nerds, you're resident Badass has a special inside look at my comic book "PINK & NANOOK" for you!

So what is Pink & Nanook all about?

Pink & Nanook (or Nani to her friends) are teenage anthropomorphic beings, 5th generation mutants in our human world. Anthro's have been growing in population rapidly and some have been adapting to our society while others have been banding together on their own in a quest for equality and freedom. Mankind is unsure what, when and why the anthro's are here. But they are, and they don't seem to be getting any fewer.

So just add all that on top of being a freak of nature, teenage hormones, cultural hang-ups and every other curveball that life can throw you and being torn inside by the desire to embrace your natural animal desires or follow the laws of man.  Pink & Nani just want live, love and enjoy life. Good luck girls. There gonna need it.

Mark's Monster Art!

Hi all, Mark here!
Today's post is an idea I came up with earlier in the year-- monsters in high school!  It was a fun idea to play with, and good for character design exercise.  Also, I like to show people that I am capable of drawing art that isn't just cute characters.

Here's a close up of the gals--
I straight-up adore Layla's design; I like how small she is compared to the others, and her inverted bob haircut is, to me, extremely cute.   Ceri and Skye also sport unique designs that were a blast to create.

 And here are the guys:
I love how Dax towers over everyone else, and I really like how sad Enoch turned out.  I also enjoyed the sharp look for Jagger's facial features and hair.

Eventually I'd like to color these in Illustrator!
Tell me, who's your favorite of the bunch?

Weekly Challenge: Alice in Wonderland

As promised, here's the full version of my Alice in Wonderland Piece.  Enjoy!

NerDee Hobbit Art

Like any good nerd I have my favorite fandoms and obsessions and my current obsession is The Hobbit movies. I'm constantly drawing all the members of Thorin's Company, but one week I decided to devote myself to The Line of Durin.  The below drawings are of Thorin, Thorin's brother and sister Frerin & Dis, and Thorin's nephews Fili and Kili.  Enjoy.

I'm thinking I might have a print of this at Oddmall ^_^

Plush Pickle keychain!

Hi all, Mark here!
The theme of the week is pickles, so I decided to do something different-- design a plush!

Fun fact: I am a huge toy nerd.  Plush toys are especially dear to me, and I have even designed a few!  Last year I designed a plush Hermit Crab for Squishable.com (viewable here), and I most recently self-published a limited edition chibi Dart Frog (see below pic).  I'll be selling a bunch of these dart frog plush at upcoming conventions (like Oddmall 2014), so check back here for more details!

What kind of pickle were you in high school? Click to take the quiz!

Sorry, no quiz here. Just some personified varieties of pickles. I have been very entertained by all of the quizzes flying around social media lately. What high school stereotype are you? (Bet you I get the arty kid!) Which Mesopotamian deity are you? What kind of British Isles cheese are you?  How many goats are you worth? (The goat quiz is real) I can't wait for the day someone does a "what kind of pickle are you" quiz!

Alice In Wonderland-- Chibi Edition

Hi all, Mark here!
Today I'm catching up on last week's theme, Alice in Wonderland.  I had so much fun I created two pieces!  (a banner & a mini scene illustration)

If you didn't already know, I love cute art, I love toys, and I love to make cute art that looks like toys.  I refer to this particular style as "chibi", which is a Japanese term that generally means "small and cute".

(If you want more cute art, please check out my website!)
Also, my pickle art for the pickle challenge will be posted soon!

Fighting crime has never been so DILLish!

This one goes out to my Sister Candice!

When we were a lot younger, I used to actually play with my Sister and her dolls and stuff. We'd actually mix em up....so we'd have these playdates of Barbies, G.I.Joe, Care Bears, Jem, Transformers ,TMNT (of course!) etc. One of our favorite dolls was this stuffed toy of a Super Pickle. Our Dad brought it home one day from one of his weekend DJ shows I think.

Anyway, ol' SP was a the man! He was always getting tossed across the house (fly!), and used as an impromptu prop to beat the other sibling with! He had a goofy face, flappy, skinny arms and legs, a cape and the SP logo on his chest and Chuck Taylors on his feet. So he may of been related to Super Host. Thats an Old Cleveland personality from way back in the day. Yeah I am old.

Just wanted to share that little story. Love ya Sissy!

When asked to submit drawing challenges to the group, my brain went dead after the first few suggestions so I just wrote the most oddest thing I could think of. Bam, Pickles. So blame me for probably the most exciting selection yet!
